The happiness in our lives is defined not by what happens to us but by how we perceive what happens. One man's tragedy is another man's life lesson, stepping stone to future happiness, or at least seen for its silver lining of "it could have been worse." This makes me think of the Chinese parable wherein a respected man's son finds a wild horse and brings it home to tame. The villagers gather and loud the asperity of the situation but the father simply says "perhaps." The next day the son breaks his arm after being thrown from the saddle. Again, the villagers meet and this time proclaim the event unlucky. "Perhaps" is the father's only reply. The next day the army marches into town and drafts every able-bodied young man but leaves the lamed son with his father. Every circumstance, when taken in the broader scheme of things, takes on a causal importance to the future. All things of our past are necessary for the happiness of the present. Much like a fairy tale, wherein much misfortune and sacrifice might be required, there is a sense of necessity to things....and hopefully, a happy "ending."
